Northern Saw-whet Owl at Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary

saw-whet owl
This Northern Saw-whet Owl was taken at George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta, BC. The Northern Saw-whet is a tiny owl with a catlike face, oversized head, and bright yellow eyes. However this picture was taken mid-day while he as resting therefore you do not see the bright yellow eyes. Saw-whets are highly nocturnal and seldom seen, but after walking the trail several times where they have been sighted each year at Reifel and a little luck we were able to spot the tiny guy about 30 feet up in a tree.
