This Common Yellowthroat was photographed perched in the brush at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge which is located in Ridgefield, Washington and is part of the Pacific Region U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Yellowthroats are small songbirds that have olive backs, wings and tails, yellow throats and chests, and white bellies. Females lack the mask and are much browner, though they usually show a hint of warm yellow at the throat.
Common Yellowthroats spend much of their time lurking low to the ground in dense thickets and fields, searching for small insects and spiders. Look for these stealthy warblers creeping through tangled foliage, often at the edges of marshes and wetlands.
